about

When Abby Smith and Sophie Jones started work on their latest album, recorded with Kris Schubert at The Boatshed in O'Connell, it became about more than creating; it was also about saying farewell to their youth and naiveté, and tuning into the magic and freedom of a new musical age.

And magic is abundant in their latest single, Waiting On My Turn, ringing out through the open tuned Gretsch strum, the sparse hammond work, and the vocal performances of these two remarkable voices.

Lyrically, Waiting On My Turn explores ideas around longing, and finally facing the truth of one's own identity, even if it is seen through a veil of wanting. Musically it is a muted and fragile thing; each instrument plays its part without embellishment, letting the two voices carry the story along with the sensitivity and honesty Smith & Jones have become known for.

Waiting On My Turn marks a new chapter for Smith & Jones, and is the musical representation of two souls who decided to yearn, and wait, and make magic, together.

lyrics

Waiting On My Turn

Last night I boarded a plane
And I flew right above the clouds
I soared like a bird through the atmosphere
And landed again on the ground
Oh what a beautiful time to be alive
Oh what a beautiful world
But now I’m stuck down here at this luggage carousel
Just waiting on my turn

I never liked the lights of the city much
But I loved the crowds
I could walk around in an anonymous reverie and
Feel like I’m lost and found
But tonight there are lovers in the street
There’s a lover in my memory
And every glance it burns and my heart it yearns but still I’m
Waiting on my turn

Another roll of the dice
Someone to cut me off a real thin slice
Of what you’re having
Cause what you’re having
Well it sure looks nice

Well I went down by the ocean
Swam out behind the breakers
My soul was reflected in that beautiful blue and I
Saw within me a faker
I’ve been lying to my friends and family
I’ve been lying to myself
So I salt my hurt and to the land I return and I’ll
Keep waiting on my turn

Yes its true I’ve been doing much better
And I’ve got my eyes on the prize
But I’ve been treading water for so many years
That still I’m wondering if I’ll sink or I’ll rise
But I’ll keep kicking through the darkest depths
I’ll walk the shoreline too
But silence I’ll spurn and my voice will be heard and I’ll
Keep waiting
Keep waiting
Keep waiting, waiting, waiting on my turn
Keep waiting on my turn
